What Makes Patagonia Fly Fishing Special

Patagonia fly fishing is one of the world's top destinations for wild trout. This vast region offers an experience that goes beyond sport, combining wilderness and world-class fishing.

Since Introduction

At the bottom of South America, this vast region is a landscape forged by the Andes mountains. Patagonia offers an experience that goes beyond fishing in patagonia, combining wilderness and world class sport.

What makes Argentine Patagonia better than other places is simple: these are 100% wild fish, grown in pristine waters. Unlike record breaking trout from New Zealand or Canada that were fed on commercial salmon pellets from aquaculture operations, Patagonia’s trophy fish live entirely on native food sources. This is pure, wild trout fishing at its best.

“Today, fishing in patagonia offers what Alaska once offered—hundreds of miles of rivers that see very little pressure.”

Since 1904, brown trout from Europe and rainbow trout from California’s McCloud River were introduced near San Martín de los Andes. They found perfect habitat with no competition and exploded across the land.
The combination of wild fish, stunning mountains and authentic gaucho culture is an experience you won’t find anywhere else.

Patagonia is renowned as one of the world's premier destinations for wild trout fishing. At the southern tip of South America, this vast region presents a landscape forged by the Andes mountains, combining pristine wilderness with world-class sport.

Chimehuin

Since Joe Brooks first fished it over 70 years ago, the Chimehuin River has been the benchmark for patagonia trout fishing. This medium to large freestone river offers wading and float fishing from a boat, known for excellent dry fly fishing and big brown trout. The river produces fish over 20 inches regularly. Stone River Lodge has exclusive access to private beats on this famous water.

Collon Cura

A big, open steppe-country river that patagonia offers as a premier destination. The river produces huge browns and stunning rainbows. Near its confluence with the Chimehuin, it has dozens of side channels with large aggressive fish. Perfect for float fishing from a boat or wade fishing.

Aluminé

Born from Lago Aluminé in the heart of Lanín National Park, this scenic river receives the famous Río Malleo, considered the finest dry-fly stream in Patagonia. Its varied runs, from boulder canyons to willow-lined banks, hold strong populations of Rainbow and Brown Trout with reliable caddis and mayfly hatches. Less pressured than neighboring rivers, it rewards with a more solitary experience.

What to Expect: The Fishing Experience

Argentine Patagonia's geography creates incredibly clear Patagonian rivers perfect for sight-fishing. Lake-fed systems provide thermal buffering and stable flows throughout the season.

Crystal Clear Waters

The clear water supports abundant insect life and healthy wild fish populations. The constant Patagonian wind blows terrestrial insects onto the water, making big, buoyant foam patterns the most consistent producers.
01

Proven Technique

The “dry-dropper” rig —a big foam dry fly with weighted nymph below—is the most effective technique for Patagonia fly fishing.

02

Target Feeding Patterns

Patagonian trout are opportunistic predators feeding on terrestrials, pancora crabs and baitfish. Sight fishing in crystal clear water is standard. Streamer fishing in low light targets big browns in deep pools.

03

What It Takes

The experience can be physically demanding—wading strong currents, hiking to beats, casting in wind. Arrive in reasonable shape. Beginners can catch trout with basic techniques, experts can go trophy hunting.
